Keeping LEIs current across a global group
Every LEI is re-certified annually, and the dates rarely line up across a group that registered entities at different times or with different providers. Once a renewal date passes, the record shows LAPSED to every bank, broker and regulator that looks it up. The code still works, but swap dealers, custodians and payment banks increasingly treat a lapsed LEI as a data-quality flag.
Renewing checks each record against its home registry again, updates addresses, names and parent relationships, and extends the next renewal date by a year. You can bring every entity in the group onto one renewal cycle and pay for several years in advance, which removes the yearly scramble across time zones.
A quick group-wide check
- Entities that were dissolved, merged or redomiciled during the year
- Changes of registered agent or registered address in the home registry
- Parent relationships after acquisitions, so the group structure in the record stays accurate
LEI renewal questions
Is a lapsed LEI still valid?
The code remains in the database and is never reassigned, but its status shows that the data has not been confirmed. Many counterparties ask for it to be renewed before they continue business.
Can we renew LEIs that another provider issued?
Yes. Transfer them to us and the renewal is included in the transfer. The codes do not change.
What happens to the LEI of a subsidiary we closed?
It should be retired with the reason recorded, for example dissolution or merger, rather than left to lapse. Contact us and we will update the record.
