One LEI, recognised in every jurisdiction

The LEI was created after 2008 so that regulators everywhere could identify the same counterparty with the same code. Today it is used far outside Europe. In the United States, swap data reported under CFTC rules identifies counterparties by LEI. In Asia-Pacific, derivative trade reporting to ASIC in Australia, the MAS in Singapore and the HKMA and SFC in Hong Kong relies on the LEI, and so does Canadian reporting under the CSA rules. Banks and payment networks worldwide add LEIs to large cross-border payments under the ISO 20022 message standard.

Because the code is global, an international group can register every subsidiary with one provider, whatever the country. Each entity is verified against its home registry. For a US company that is the Secretary of State of its state of formation, often Delaware. For a Singapore company it is ACRA and the UEN, for Hong Kong the Companies Registry, and for Australia ASIC and the ACN. The applicant must be authorised to act for the entity.

LEIs also identify funds, trusts, partnerships and government bodies, so special-purpose vehicles and fund structures can be registered alongside operating companies.

For each entity you register

  • The official registry and entity number, e.g. Delaware file number, ACRA UEN, HK CR number or ACN
  • Legal name and registered address exactly as held by that registry
  • Name and title of the authorised person applying
  • Direct and ultimate parent, if the entity is consolidated into group accounts
  • For non-English names, the transliterated name used in the registry, if one exists

Global LEI registration questions

Does it matter which country our LEI provider is in?

No. All LEIs live in one global database maintained under GLEIF oversight. A code issued by any accredited issuer is accepted by regulators, banks and trade repositories in every jurisdiction.

We are a US LLC formed in Delaware but operating in Texas. Which address do we use?

The legal address is the registered address in the state of formation, Delaware in this case. Your operating address in Texas can be added as the headquarters address.

Can we register subsidiaries in several countries in one order?

Yes. Use the bulk order option. Each entity is still verified against its own registry, but you manage all of them, and their renewals, from one account.

Do individuals or sole proprietors need an LEI?

Generally no. LEIs identify legal entities. Individuals acting in a business capacity are eligible only in limited cases.

Our company name is in Chinese or Arabic. How is it recorded?

The LEI record stores the legal name in its original script, exactly as registered, and can also hold a transliterated or English trading name for searching.
